One of the harshest realities of the ageing population are neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
The Abertis Foundation has supported the Alzheimer’s Foundation since it was established. This organisation works in several areas. One of these is in support of the quality of life of the sick and of their carers. Another is prevention, researching the twenty years prior to the appearance of the disease. The goal of the ambitious ALFA study is, thanks to an extensive group of volunteers, to learn of the factors leading to Alzheimer’s disease so that it can be prevented many years before it appears.
Along the same lines of support for state-of-the-art research, the Abertis Foundation collaborates with the TV3 Marathon Foundation. This foundation channels the funds obtained from the telethon organised by the Catalan public television station to scientific research into diseases that are currently incurable. In 2018, the funds raised went to cancer research.
The Guttmann Institute is not only one of our partners in road safety: UNICEF, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, the Guttmann Institute and the Abertis Foundation have kick-started the Rights of Way project to fight accidents involving school-age children in Third World countries. A multi-disciplinary medical team have travelled with the Abertis Foundation team to leading children’s hospitals where children involved in road traffic accidents are treated in order to teach good practices among the local healthcare personnel and minimise the after effects of the accidents.
The Guttmann Institute also promotes the Barcelona Brain Health Initiativeprogramme to promote brain health research nationally and internationally. It has our support in this endeavour.
